Universal Student Unionism

Since the introduction of voluntary student unionism (VSU) in 2005, student organizations have had their budgets slashed. This means less services, support and representation for students on campus. The government promised students they would address this and proposed The Student Services and Amenities Fee and National Representative Protocols. Each year since 2006 the National Union rates universities on their support of student life and representation. Find out where your campus is rated here.
A National Student Concession Card

International students in Victoria and New South Wales, students in regional Queensland and postgrads in Victoria cannot access student concession cards for transport. Concession cards aren’t recognized interstate. Get involved here.

The government is planning a review of clusters in 2011, this means they will be reviewing how much HECS debt you will have. Students are sending a clear message to government that students want HECS decreased. If you believe Education should be free and students debt free, read more here.

International students are suffering attacks, limited rights at work and over priced accommodation. These students deserve a fair education just like everyone else. The National Union of Students is calling on the government to implement a raft of reforms that would make education fair for international students.

NUS supports Walk for Harmony, Sunday 12 July

On Sunday 12 July, Premier John Brumby will lead a Walk for Harmony to reaffirm to the world Victoria’s strong support for multiculturalism.
Bring your family and friends and join us to show your support for our State’s cultural diversity!
Successive waves of immigrants and refugees have made our state a better place. Victoria’s commitment to multiculturalism has been an example to the world.
Now is the time to reaffirm to a national and international audience that our commitment to multiculturalism is stronger than ever and that the Victorian community values the contributions that people from around the world have made to our state.
The Walk for Harmony will begin at Carlton Gardens at 1:00pm on Sunday July 12 and will proceed along La Trobe Street to Swanston Street and continue on to Federation Square. Details of the Walk are posted at www.culturaldiversity.vic.gov.au or see the attached flyer (link below).
You can also get involved as a volunteer on the day! Check out the website for details.
Come along on Sunday 12 July and do your bit to show your support for multiculturalism in Victoria.
