Students are gathering at Canberra to demonstrate the importance of accessible and equitable education.
Venue: Front Lawns of Parliament House (Federal)
Time: 11:00am – 11:20am Wednesday 13th June 2007
The delegation has been organised by the National Union of Students to coincide with the debate of the Higher Education Legislation Amendment (2007 Budget Measures) bill.
The student delegation will be made up of students from the University of Sydney, the University of Technology, Sydney, the University of New South Wales, the University of Canberra and the Australian National University.
National President, Michael Nguyen said, “Students are saying no to the doors of Universities being closed to those families who cannot afford to take out a mortgage for their children’s education.”
“Despite the requirement that Universities fill their commonwealth supported places before enrolling full fee entry students, there is no ability for the Government to ensure that this requirement is fulfilled by cash strapped Universities. Universities aren’t receiving from the government enough money to cover the cost of course delivery for HECS places,” Mr Nguyen said.
