Students will be demonstrating their opposition to the proposed closure of the Queensland University of Technology, School of Humanities outside the University Academic Board meeting on Wed 16th May.
Time: 9am Wed 16th May
Location: QUT A Block, Kelvin Grove, Brisbane
Students are continuing the campaign, which has seen 2 successive demonstrations over the last two weeks. Students began the campaign demonstrating at the Carseldine Campus where the bulk of Humanities is taught and last week took their anger to the Vice Chancellor’s office at Gardens Point campus.
This Wednesday the students will be taking their protest to the Kelvin Grove campus where the University Academic Board will be meeting. The protest is also part of the National Union of Students National Snap Action against full fee entry degrees.
National Union of Students, National President, Mr Michael Nguyen said, “The proposal from the QUT administration is indicative of the higher education policy agenda of the current federal Government.”
“The closure of the Humanities is part of a sector wide campaign by the government to silence voices critical of their agenda. The Howard government has engaged in overt attacks on post-modernism in high school curricula and the so called “lefties” at Universities.”
“Just as the government used VSU to attempt to silence students and silence voices critical of government policy, the philosophical underpinnings of the Howard government’s education policy is designed to encourage Universities that produce workers without the lateral and critical problem solving skills essential for making a contribution to the community.”
“The move to allow increases in full-fee entry places and on campus decisions to reduce course offerings is a result of 10 years of under-funding and ideological policy from the Howard government.”
